KALGOORLIE, Western Australia — Black Cat Syndicate has achieved a critical production milestone with the first gold pour at its Lakewood processing facility, signaling the company’s transformation from developer to active producer in Western Australia’s fiercely competitive gold sector.
The Lakewood plant, located just 6 kilometers from Kalgoorlie, processed its first gold on April 16, yielding 757 ounces. The commissioning follows Black Cat’s A$85 million acquisition of the site from Westgold Resources, completed in early April.
Gold Flows Early at 1.2MTPA Lakewood Facility
Operations at Lakewood began swiftly after acquisition, with ore haulage starting immediately and the plant operating “safely and smoothly,” the company said. Since April 1, Black Cat has hauled approximately 60,000 tonnes of ore from its Myhree deposit, with processing throughput ramping up to an annualized rate of 1.2 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).
Unreconciled gold production so far totals 2,740 ounces, recovered from 42,000 tonnes at 2.10g/t, with recovery rates exceeding 95%. The company also confirmed that crushed ore stockpiles have surpassed 10,000 tonnes, a key indicator of operational momentum.
“The commencement of processing through Lakewood has started well with throughputs, grade and recoveries all above expectation,” said Managing Director Gareth Solly. “First gold at Lakewood is yet another successful milestone in the accelerated Kal East plan.”
A Strategic Leap Toward ‘More Gold, Sooner’
The Lakewood acquisition, which included a cash and equity deal with Westgold, allows Black Cat to fast-track its Kal East Gold Project by more than a year. The facility is located just 40km from Kal East and 24km from Myhree, enabling efficient ore transportation and centralized processing.
The purchase also increased Black Cat’s processing capacity by 50%, up from 0.8mtpa under previous plans.
“Black Cat is now transforming into a significant WA gold producer — producing more gold, sooner,” Solly said.
This new phase comes as the company continues aggressive drilling programs across its tenement package, aiming to build out its resource base while simultaneously growing production.

Next Up: Underground Mining at Myhree
Regulatory approvals for underground operations at the Myhree deposit were recently granted. Underground mining is set to begin after open-pit activities conclude in October 2025, aligning with Black Cat’s plan to build multiple sources of mill feed.
The company hinted that further mining approvals for nearby deposits are expected soon, potentially supporting long-term throughput at Lakewood.
“The Myhree underground mining approval provides optionality for Kal East,” Solly added. “With Lakewood running well, and the open pits ahead of schedule, we are looking forward to a smooth transition to additional mines.”
A New Producer in Australia’s Gold Belt
Black Cat’s rapid commissioning of Lakewood places it in a small club of juniors who have transitioned into full-scale production in WA’s saturated gold market. The facility, long seen as underutilized under its previous owners, is now central to the company’s “more gold, sooner” mantra.
As the gold price continues to hover above US$2,300 per ounce, Black Cat’s early production positions it to capture near-term upside while continuing to expand its reserves base.
Industry analysts say the project’s proximity to Kalgoorlie and existing infrastructure provides competitive advantages that could make Black Cat a potential takeover target or future consolidator.
An Emerging Contender in Western Australia Gold Mining
With Lakewood fully operational, Black Cat enters the ranks of active Australian gold producers with a processing facility capable of scaling alongside its exploration success. The early results offer validation for the company’s dual-track strategy of near-term production and long-term resource growth.
For now, the company appears ahead of schedule, on budget, and with multiple growth levers in play.
