In a pivotal development for the North American critical minerals landscape, Rio Tinto gallium extraction has commenced at its Vaudreuil alumina refinery in Saguenay, Quebec, marking the continent’s first successful recovery of primary gallium from bauxite. This milestone, in collaboration with Indium Corporation, positions North America gallium production for a strategic resurgence as global markets face tightening supply conditions.
The first extraction phase occurred at Indium Corporation’s R&D facility in Rome, New York, utilizing bauxite residue from Rio Tinto’s Canadian operations. The pilot process validated the feasibility of capturing gallium—a metal typically found in trace amounts during alumina processing—and now advances to a demonstration phase in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. Backed by the Quebec government, the facility aims to produce 3.5 tonnes of gallium annually, with commercial expansion targets set at 40 tonnes per year—an estimated 5–10% of current global output.

Scaling North America Gallium Production
Currently, the global gallium market is heavily concentrated, with approximately 600 tonnes produced annually, predominantly in China, Germany, and Kazakhstan. With China imposing export controls on gallium and other critical minerals, North America gallium production has been largely absent—until now.
