Green steel production has taken a significant step forward as China officially launched what is being described as the world’s first million-ton hydrogen-based steel production line, signaling a major shift toward lower-carbon industrial manufacturing.
A Landmark Moment for Green Steel Production
The factory, owned and operated by China Baowu Steel Group, has been operating at full scale since last week in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province. The facility is reported to be the first of its kind to achieve industrial-scale production, with the capacity to produce close to one million metric tons of low-carbon steel annually.
Hydrogen Used Instead of Coal in Steel Production
Conventional blast furnaces rely on coal-derived coke as a reducing agent to extract iron from iron ore. In contrast, this facility uses hydrogen as the reducing agent. In the chemical process, hydrogen reacts with oxygen in the iron ore to form water vapor rather than carbon dioxide, significantly reducing emissions.
Traditional steelmaking depends on iron ore and coke, which is produced from coal. Coke is not produced from carbon because it is cheaper than iron; rather, it is produced because carbon effectively removes oxygen from iron ore at high temperatures. This hydrogen-based process replaces carbon with hydrogen for that reduction step.
Green Steel Plant Cuts Carbon Emissions
According to industry estimates, hydrogen-based steel production can reduce carbon emissions by 50–80 percent compared to conventional blast furnace methods, depending on the hydrogen source. The project is expected to reduce more than 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, making it one of the largest single green steel initiatives announced to date.

The facility integrates renewable electricity and high-efficiency electric furnaces to further reduce its environmental impact. The combination of hydrogen metallurgy and clean power strengthens the plant’s position as a next-generation green steel facility.
Creating an International Precedent for the Steel Industry
Steel production accounts for approximately 7–8 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, making decarbonization of the sector critical for achieving global climate goals. Industry analysts note that projects such as this could accelerate global adoption of green steel for construction, manufacturing, and low-emission vehicles.
