The lithium production landscape witnessed a remarkable surge in 2023, with production soaring by over 760 percent driven by the activation of numerous mines and lithium processing facilities. Data released by the country’s statistics agency ZIMSTAT revealed an astounding increase, with lithium production reaching 745,455 metric tonnes (MT) in 2023, marking a significant leap from the 86,330 MT produced in 2022.
Record Breaking Growth in Lithium Production
The year 2023 witnessed unprecedented growth in lithium production, with each quarter showing remarkable increases. In the first quarter, production surged by approximately 130.9 percent, reaching 25,000 MT compared to 10,825 MT in the same period of 2022. Subsequently, the second quarter saw a staggering spike of about 405.8 percent, with production reaching 79,689 MT from 15,755 MT in 2022.

Similarly, the fourth quarter experienced a substantial increase of approximately 1220.1 percent, with production reaching 315,287 MT, up from 23,884 MT in 2022.
Economic Impact and Export Growth
The surge in lithium production has significant economic implications, as highlighted by the Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Hon. Zhemu Soda. Despite export bans, lithium exports generated over USD 600 million in 2023, surpassing the initial target of half a billion US dollars. Minister Soda emphasized the importance of lithium minerals to the country’s economy and reiterated the government’s commitment to maximizing gains from mineral resources.
Government Initiatives and Future Strategies
Hon. Soda outlined various strategies aimed at enhancing the country’s mineral sector, including the establishment of Special Purpose Vehicles for mineral exploration, reactivation of dormant mines, and expansion of existing projects. The government also aims to curb mineral leakages, increase capacity utilization, and promote value addition and beneficiation across the entire sector.
