AMEA Power, a leading renewable energy company, has officially commenced construction on a significant 24 MWp Solar Photovoltaic (PV) project in Uganda. The groundbreaking ceremony, held last Friday, marks a pivotal step in Uganda’s transition towards a sustainable energy future.
Ceremonial Event
The event was graced by Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, who served as the Guest of Honour. Other notable attendees included Ms. Irene Bateebe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, and Mr. Aqueel Bohra, Chief Investment Officer at AMEA Power. Senior representatives from the Uleppi Subcounty, Madi Okollo District, various Members of Parliament, and officials from energy sector agencies also attended.
Project Details
Located on a 52-hectare site in Ombachi village, Uleppi Subcounty, Madi Okollo District, the project is being developed by Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, a subsidiary of AMEA Power. The solar PV plant will feature a 1X24 MVA 33/132 kV transformer substation and switchyard, connected to the Lira-Gulu-Nebbi-Arua 132 kV transmission line. This $19 million project is funded by the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF) and supported by the African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) through its Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF).
Strategic Importance
Once operational, this solar PV power plant will be the largest utility-scale grid-connected solar project in the West Nile region. It is expected to generate approximately 53,940 MWh of clean energy annually, powering over 192,640 households and reducing carbon emissions by 26,600 tonnes each year. The commissioning is slated for Q3 2025.

Community Engagement and Future Plans
AMEA Power is committed to engaging with local communities through its ‘Community Investment and Development Programs,’ which focus on gender equality, education, and training. The company has signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd. and an Implementation Agreement with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, both formalized in September 2023.
