Pilbara, WA – De Grey Mining Ltd has solidified its financial backing for the Hemi gold project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region with a pivotal $150 million loan from the Federal Government’s Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF). This loan forms a crucial component of the company’s $1 billion senior debt facility, signaling a significant step forward for one of Australia’s most promising gold projects.
Federal Support Anchors Major Financing Effort
The NAIF loan is not merely a financial boost; it represents a strong vote of confidence from the Australian government in the Hemi gold project. The $1 billion debt package, which includes the NAIF loan, is nearly complete, with term sheets already approved by commercial banks for the remaining amount. Additionally, a $130 million cost overrun facility is included in the funding package, ensuring the project stays on track even in the face of potential financial challenges.
Glenn Jardine, De Grey’s managing director, acknowledged the critical role played by government officials in securing the loan. “We appreciate the strong support for the development of Hemi shown by NAIF and would like to acknowledge the important role played by the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Hon. Madeleine King MP, and the Special Envoy for Northern Australia, Luke Gosling OAM,” Jardine stated.
Strategic Impact on Pilbara’s Mining Landscape
The Hemi gold project is poised to become a cornerstone of the Pilbara region’s mining industry, which is already a major hub for resource extraction in Australia. The project’s processing facility will not only serve the Hemi mine but could potentially process ores from other sites across Northern Australia. This positions Hemi as a strategic asset with long-term regional significance, contributing to both commodity diversification and the enhancement of mineral processing capabilities in Pilbara.
“Hemi is an important project for the Pilbara region which will help provide commodity diversification and new mineral processing skills in what is already a mining heartland of Western Australia,” Jardine added, highlighting the broader economic implications of the project.

Commitment to Indigenous Partnerships
A key aspect of the NAIF agreement is De Grey’s commitment to working closely with the Kariyarra People, the Native Title holders of the land. The company plans to create economic, employment, and vocational opportunities for the Kariyarra community, including the establishment of a ranger program within Kariyarra Country. This initiative will support cultural heritage preservation and land management, aligning with broader national goals of sustainable development and Indigenous empowerment.
Pathway to Final Investment Decision
With significant cash reserves and the newly secured debt facilities, De Grey is now well-positioned to advance towards a final investment decision for the Hemi project. However, this decision remains contingent on the completion of final environmental approvals, a process that will be closely watched by stakeholders across the mining industry.
The Hemi gold project is expected to not only enhance the economic landscape of Pilbara but also set a benchmark for how large-scale mining projects can incorporate environmental and community considerations into their development plans.
