
U.S. and Danish officials intensified efforts last year to dissuade Tanbreez Mining, developer of Greenland’s largest rare earths deposit, from selling its project to Chinese-linked buyers. Greg Barnes, CEO of Tanbreez Mining, confirmed U.S. officials visited the southern Greenland project twice in 2024, urging the cash-strapped company to avoid deals involving Beijing-linked firms. Rare earths, essential for technologies ranging from electric vehicles to missile systems, have become a geopolitical flashpoint as the U.S. seeks to curb China’s dominance over their extraction and processing.

Strategic Sale to U.S.-Linked Firm Blocks Chinese Rare Earths Acquisition
Despite higher offers from Chinese companies, Tanbreez was sold to New York-based Critical Metals (CRML.O) in a $216 million deal comprising $5 million in cash and the rest in equity. Tony Sage, CEO of Critical Metals, acknowledged the influence of U.S. officials in shaping the deal.
“There was a lot of pressure not to sell to China,” Sage told Reuters, emphasizing the geopolitical considerations surrounding the Chinese Rare Earths Acquisition efforts.
The Tanbreez deposit, expected to produce 500,000 metric tons of the rare earth mineral eudialyte annually by 2026, is about 30% heavy rare earths, critical for defense applications. The site also contains gallium, a material China imposed export restrictions on in 2024.
U.S. Influence Reshaping Rare Earths Investment
The U.S. government’s intervention in Greenland reflects a strategic pivot in its approach to rare earths projects, particularly in blocking potential Chinese Rare Earths Acquisitions. Analysts note that Washington’s involvement has drawn investor attention to deposits previously considered less viable.
David Merriman, research director at Project Blue, pointed out potential challenges with Tanbreez’s mineralogy. “While the size of Tanbreez is significant, the grade and mineralogy are challenging for commercial production,” he said.
Despite these challenges, the U.S. Department of Defense has started evaluating funding for a rare earths processing facility for Critical Metals. Sage also confirmed talks with defense contractors like Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) and upcoming negotiations with RTX (RTX.N) and Boeing (BA.N) to secure supply agreements.
Competing Interests in Greenland
The U.S. strategy to counter Chinese Rare Earths Acquisitions stands in stark contrast to China’s extensive influence in the rare earths sector. A competing Greenland project by Energy Transition Minerals (ETM.AX), supported by China’s Shenghe Resources, has been embroiled in legal disputes, limiting its development.
“Greenland is not for sale, but it is open for business,” said Dwayne Menezes, head of the Polar Research and Policy Initiative. Menezes emphasized Greenland’s receptiveness to Western investment, particularly from the U.S., as a counterweight to China’s growing presence.
