Anglo American Divests Nickel Assets as It Refocuses on Copper and Iron Ore

Anglo American’s Strategic Nickel Sale to MMG Limited
Anglo American plc has reached an agreement to sell its nickel business to MMG Singapore Resources Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of MMG Limited, for a total consideration of up to $500 million. This transaction aligns with Anglo American’s broader strategy to streamline its mining portfolio and prioritize high-value commodities such as copper mining, premium iron ore, and crop nutrients.
The nickel mining assets involved in this deal include:
- Barro Alto and Codemin, two operational ferronickel mines in Brazil
- Jacaré and Morro Sem Boné (MSB), two major greenfield nickel development projects
MMG’s $500 Million Nickel Deal: Structure and Strategic Importance
Under the agreement, MMG will make an initial payment of $350 million at closing, with an earnout of up to $100 million based on future nickel prices. Additionally, $50 million in contingent payments is tied to the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the greenfield nickel projects.
Duncan Wanblad, CEO of Anglo American, highlighted the importance of the deal:
“The sale of our nickel business after a highly competitive process marks a further important milestone towards simplifying our portfolio to create a more highly valued copper, premium iron ore, and crop nutrients business. Today’s agreement, together with those signed in November 2024 to sell our steelmaking coal business, is expected to generate a total of up to $5.3 billion of gross cash proceeds.”
This transaction is part of Anglo American’s mining strategy to optimize its assets, ensuring higher shareholder returns while navigating shifting commodity demand trends and increasing environmental regulations on carbon-intensive industries.
Why MMG is Investing in Nickel and Latin America
For MMG Limited, this nickel acquisition strengthens its mining presence in Latin America and expands its critical minerals portfolio. Nickel mining is crucial for both stainless steel production and the EV battery supply chain, making it a strategic commodity amid the global energy transition.
Cao Liang, CEO of MMG, stated:
“We are excited by our acquisition of Anglo American’s nickel business, which provides important diversification for our business and strengthens our presence in Latin America. This is a strong business with a talented team, growth potential, and demonstrated excellence in sustainability performance.”
With nickel demand rising due to electric vehicle (EV) adoption and clean energy initiatives, MMG’s investment positions it as a key player in the global nickel supply chain.
Anglo American’s High-Quality Nickel Assets and Sustainability Credentials
Anglo American’s Brazilian nickel mines are recognized for their high-grade nickel production and strong environmental performance. In 2024, these operations produced 39,400 metric tons of nickel.
Notably, Barro Alto is the only nickel mine globally certified by the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), achieving IRMA 75 certification.
The acquisition also includes two major greenfield nickel projects:
- Jacaré: A large-scale nickel deposit with approximately 300 million metric tons (Mt) of mineral resources
- Morro Sem Boné (MSB): A high-potential nickel site with an estimated 65 Mt of mineralization
These projects offer long-term growth potential in nickel production, supporting MMG’s expansion into battery metals and stainless steel raw materials.
Regulatory Approvals and Deal Completion Timeline
The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and competition clearances. The $350 million upfront payment is subject to standard completion adjustments, and the deal is expected to close by Q3 2025.
This sale is a major step in Anglo American’s portfolio restructuring, reinforcing MMG’s ambitions in the nickel mining sector. As global demand for battery metals surges, this deal highlights the evolving landscape of the mining industry.
