Geophysical Surveys Uncover Promising Drill Targets at Mt Isa North
Antares Metals (ASX: AM5) has discovered additional copper targets at its Conglomerate Creek prospect, further strengthening the potential of its Mt Isa North project. The latest findings, identified through high-definition gravity and magnetic surveys, come just weeks after three copper targets were outlined at the nearby Surprise project.
The new data reveals a significant intrusion-related mineral system spanning approximately 2km in diameter, linked to multiple major geological structures. A secondary intrusion northeast of the primary system has also been identified, increasing the project’s exploration potential. Several gravity anomalies, coinciding with key structural features, have been classified as high-priority drill targets.
Strategic Location in a Rich Mining District
Located about 80km northeast of Mount Isa, the Mt Isa North project is in one of Australia’s most mineral-rich regions. The project surrounds Paladin Energy’s (ASX: PDN) Valhalla uranium asset—Australia’s third-largest uranium project—and is adjacent to Glencore’s extensive Mt Isa operations. Other notable neighbors include 29Metals (ASX: 29M) and Fortescue (ASX: FMG).
Antares’ 2,000km² landholding has demonstrated strong potential for copper, zinc, silver, lead, gold, and uranium, yet much of the area remains underexplored. Previous exploration efforts, dating back to the 1950s, have only scratched the surface of the region’s mineral systems. Since acquiring the asset in 2023, Antares has focused on expanding the Surprise mineralization footprint, uncovering new copper deposits, and advancing the Queens Gift uranium resource to meet JORC 2012 standards.
Copper Prices Surge, Boosting Exploration Prospects
The discovery comes at a time when copper prices are nearing a 10-month high, reaching nearly US$4.90 per pound. China’s recent economic stimulus measures have bolstered demand expectations, positioning copper as a key driver in the global energy transition.
For junior exploration companies like Antares, rising commodity prices improve the ability to secure funding and accelerate drilling programs.
Company Optimistic About Discovery Potential
Antares CEO Johan Lambrechts emphasized the significance of the new findings, noting the company’s systematic approach to target identification.
“We have invested considerable time and effort in acquiring and interpreting geophysical data to uncover these exciting drill targets,” he said. “Following a similar approach at Surprise, we are now set to explore the non-outcropping, subsurface extensions of the mineralization. Although drilling untested targets can be challenging, we are excited by the potential of making a new discovery.”
Intrusion-related copper-gold systems have the potential to host large-scale deposits, and identifying such a system could be a transformational milestone for Antares.
New Exploration Leadership at Antares
To support its growing exploration activities, Antares has appointed Matthew Porter as its new exploration manager. With more than 25 years of experience— including over five years at Sandfire Resources and three years working on uranium projects with Paladin Energy—Porter brings valuable expertise to the team.
“Matt has an extensive understanding of the mineral systems in the Mt Isa Inlier and the broader region,” Lambrechts said. “His experience will be instrumental in achieving our exploration objectives.”
With a strengthened leadership team and newly identified drill targets, Antares Metals is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for copper and advance its Mt Isa North project.
