London-listed Caracal Gold PLC has secured a mining license for its Kanegele project, marking a pivotal step in the company’s strategic expansion in Tanzania. Caracal’s Tanzanian subsidiary, Tyacks Gold, obtained the first of two necessary licenses after submitting applications in December 2023, enabling the company to capitalize on the Kanegele project’s promising mineral reserves. This advancement, Caracal asserts, aligns with its broader ambition to enhance production capabilities in one of East Africa’s gold-rich regions.
Positioned in Tanzania’s Lake Victoria Gold Fields
The Kanegele project, located within the Nyakafuru project area, sits roughly 140 kilometers southwest of Mwanza, Tanzania’s second-largest city. Benefiting from established infrastructure, the project is part of the prolific Lake Victoria Gold Fields, a prominent hub for gold mining. Caracal highlights that the area holds a Joint Ore Reserve Committee (JORC)-compliant resource estimated at 658,000 ounces, distributed across four key deposits: Voyager, Mentelle, Cullen, and Leeuwin.
Roadmap to Production
With the initial mining license secured, Caracal intends to expedite the Kanegele project’s development as an open-pit, carbon-in-leach (CIL) gold operation. The company points to extensive historical mining work, feasibility studies, and existing infrastructure as critical components positioning the project for swift advancement.
The immediate plan involves several technical assessments, including additional drilling to expand the resource base, updating JORC resource and reserve estimates, and refining pit designs. Caracal also intends to conduct metallurgical, geotechnical, and environmental studies to meet international standards, an essential step for securing project financing. Additionally, the company is finalizing detailed engineering plans for a processing plant, with site preparation and construction set to begin shortly thereafter.
Key Milestone for Caracal’s Expansion
According to Caracal’s chairperson, Simon Grant-Rennick, obtaining the Kanegele license is a crucial milestone. “With shallow, high-grade gold resources and robust historical work already completed, Kanegele ticks all the right boxes for development,” he stated. Grant-Rennick emphasized that the project will play a significant role in Caracal’s strategy to expand its production portfolio across high-potential African assets.
Future Outlook: A Boost to Tanzania’s Mining Sector
Caracal’s progress at Kanegele aligns with Tanzania’s strategic goals to advance its mining sector, prioritized by the government as part of its economic diversification efforts. The Tanzanian government has actively encouraged foreign investments in the mining industry, aiming to create jobs and stimulate economic growth through partnerships with international mining companies.
As Caracal undertakes the foundational work for the Kanegele project, it positions itself among prominent foreign investors fostering growth in Tanzania’s gold industry. If the Kanegele project proceeds as anticipated, it could serve as a catalyst for further mining investments in the Lake Victoria Gold Fields, a region long targeted by both local and international exploration firms.
