BUENOS AIRES: Central Puerto (NYSE: CEPU), Argentina’s largest private power producer, has increased its strategic investment in AbraSilver Resource Corp. (TSX.V: ABRA; OTCQX: ABBRF), raising its ownership stake to 18.5%. The company announced the move early Thursday. As a result, the investment highlights stronger ties between Argentina’s energy sector and its expanding critical minerals industry.
Central Puerto completed a direct private placement and exercised existing warrants to provide AbraSilver with fresh capital. The funding will help accelerate construction of the flagship Diablillos silver-gold project in Salta Province. Moreover, this marks Central Puerto’s second major investment since entering the company in 2025. The deal also makes the utility Argentina’s largest domestic shareholder in the project.
For investors and mining companies, the investment signals growing confidence in Argentina’s mining sector. By securing an 18.5% stake, Central Puerto strengthens its portfolio while helping reduce development risk at one of the world’s largest undeveloped silver projects.
Strategic Alignment Under the RIGI Framework
Argentina’s Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI) played a major role in the timing of this investment. The framework has changed the risk-reward balance for large mining projects across the Puna region. Projects that qualify receive 30 years of fiscal stability, lower corporate tax rates, and gradually reduced export duties. Consequently, Central Puerto viewed these incentives as a key reason to expand its investment.
“The RIGI framework provides the legislative bedrock that domestic industrial leaders like Central Puerto need to commit multi-year capital to the mining sector,” said an industry analyst familiar with the deal.
Furthermore, Central Puerto’s investment reflects a broader trend among utilities and industrial companies. Many are securing upstream mineral supply chains to support long-term growth. Although silver remains a precious metal, demand from solar panels and electronic components continues to rise. Therefore, the investment aligns with Central Puerto’s energy transition strategy.
Diablillos: A Cornerstone Asset in the Puna
The Diablillos project remains the centerpiece of AbraSilver’s growth strategy. Located in the high-altitude Salta-Catamarca region, it offers strong project economics and long-term production potential. Recent technical studies estimate a net present value of about US$4.8 billion. Meanwhile, rising silver demand continues to improve the project’s outlook.

The project contains more than 250 million ounces of silver equivalent. With Central Puerto’s latest funding, AbraSilver will complete engineering and procurement activities before making a construction decision later this year.
In addition, Central Puerto brings valuable operational expertise. As Argentina’s largest private power producer, it can help solve energy and infrastructure challenges at the remote mine site. The company can also support future grid connections and renewable power integration.
Industrial Backing and Market Significance
Central Puerto’s investment marks an important shift in Argentina’s mining industry. Historically, foreign companies dominated large mining projects across the Andes. However, domestic industrial leaders are now taking a much larger role. As a result, international investors may view Diablillos as a lower-risk project with stronger local support.
Moreover, analysts believe similar partnerships could emerge across South America. Utilities increasingly recognize the importance of securing critical mineral supply chains. At the same time, precious metals continue to benefit from strong industrial demand.

Furthermore, the investment comes at a time when the gold price forecast and silver’s industrial tailwinds are converging to create high-margin opportunities for precious metals producers. Central Puerto is effectively buying into a low-cost, high-grade production profile that is expected to generate significant free cash flow once operational.
The Role of Infrastructure and Technology
The development of Diablillos is not just about the ore; it is about the scale of the technology being deployed. AbraSilver has committed to using high-efficiency processing technology and modern fleet management systems to optimize production in the thin air of the Salta mountains.
Central Puerto’s technical teams are expected to collaborate on the power-side engineering, potentially incorporating hybrid solar-gas solutions that have become the standard for sustainable mining in the region. This collaboration is expected to reduce the project’s carbon footprint, a key requirement for attracting ESG-focused capital from European and North American institutional investors.

Economic Outlook and Regional Impact
The expansion of the Central Puerto stake is expected to create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs in the Salta and Catamarca provinces. Beyond the immediate employment at the mine, the infrastructure development required for the project: including roads, power lines, and water management systems: will provide long-term benefits to remote communities in the high Andes.
For the Salta provincial government, the deal is a validation of its “mining-friendly” policies. Salta has consistently ranked as one of the top jurisdictions for mining investment in South America, and the pairing of a Canadian explorer with a major Argentine utility is seen as the ideal outcome for local economic stability.
As Argentina continues to grapple with macroeconomic volatility, the mining sector: backed by the RIGI framework: stands out as a primary engine of growth. The steady influx of capital into projects like Diablillos provides the hard currency and industrial activity that the national economy requires.
Conclusion: A New Era of Integration
Central Puerto’s decision to increase its stake to 18.5% represents far more than an equity investment. Instead, it demonstrates how Argentina’s energy and mining sectors are becoming more closely integrated.
Looking ahead, the global mining industry will closely watch the Diablillos project. If AbraSilver and Central Puerto successfully move into production, they could establish a new model for domestic investment in Latin American mining.
Overall, the investment sends a clear message. Argentina’s mining sector continues to attract strategic capital, while domestic companies play an increasingly important role in developing world-class critical mineral projects.
