The scramble for Greenland isn’t about polar bears or climate tourism anymore. It’s about what’s underneath the ice: and increasingly, what the melting ice is exposing. We’re talking rare earth elements, graphite, cobalt, nickel, and a shopping list of critical minerals that defense contractors, EV manufacturers, and AI chip makers desperately need. And right now, governments, billionaires, and mining majors are racing to plant their flags in the frozen north before someone else does.
Greenland mining has shifted from a niche geological curiosity to a full-blown geopolitical flashpoint. The Trump Greenland strategy: whether you view it as shrewd resource positioning or diplomatic theater: reflects a deeper truth: whoever controls access to these Arctic deposits controls a significant piece of the 21st-century supply chain.
The Ice Is Melting, and the Minerals Are Calling
Here’s the uncomfortable paradox at the heart of this story: climate change: the very crisis driving demand for green technology minerals: is also what’s making Greenland accessible in the first place.
Ice loss from Greenland has increased fivefold since the 1990s. That’s not a typo. Five times more ice is disappearing now than three decades ago, and the Arctic is warming four times faster than the global average. What this means practically is longer shipping seasons, milder operational winters, and access to areas that were previously locked under permanent ice.

Only about 20% of Greenland is ice-free, but that 20% is absolutely loaded. We’re talking rare earth elements, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, lead, gold, uranium, graphite, and iron ore. The Kvanefjeld deposit alone: located in southern Greenland: ranks as the third-largest known land deposit of rare earth elements on the planet, with over 11 million metric tons of reserves and resources, including 370,000 metric tons of heavy rare earths.
Heavy rare earths. The stuff that goes into permanent magnets for wind turbines, precision-guided munitions, and the motors in every electric vehicle rolling off assembly lines from Detroit to Shenzhen. This isn’t speculative geology: it’s verified strategic treasure.
Billionaires, Mining Majors, and the New Arctic Land Grab
The investor class has noticed. Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Michael Bloomberg are backing ventures like the Disko-Nuussuaq project through KoBold Metals and Bluejay Mining. These aren’t philanthropic bets: they’re calculated plays on the energy transition supply chain.
Bluejay Mining alone has four projects under development in Greenland. Anglo American controls more than 7,000 km² in exploration licenses in the Avannaata municipality alone. As of 2019, approximately 35,000 km² were under exploration across Greenland: roughly the size of Taiwan: and that footprint has almost certainly expanded since then.
Yet here’s the kicker: despite all this activity, Greenland currently has only two active mines. Two. The White Mountain anorthosite mine and the Nalunaq gold mine. That’s it. Decades of exploration, billions in investment interest, and the actual extraction infrastructure remains minimal.
The gap between exploration licenses and operating mines tells you everything about the barriers. Harsh climate, limited infrastructure, complex permitting, and: increasingly: local political resistance.
Defense Minerals and the Geopolitical Stakes
Let’s talk about why Washington cares so much about Greenland mining.

China currently controls roughly 60% of global rare earth mining and nearly 90% of rare earth processing capacity. That’s a chokehold on supply chains critical to everything from fighter jets to smartphones. When Beijing restricted rare earth exports to Japan in 2010 during a diplomatic dispute, prices spiked and supply chains panicked. The lesson wasn’t lost on defense planners in Washington, Brussels, or Canberra.
Greenland represents one of the few plausible alternatives to Chinese rare earth dominance. The deposits are real, the grades are high, and: critically: the island sits in a Western-allied political orbit (technically an autonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO member).
The Trump Greenland strategy, which resurfaced with renewed intensity in late 2024 and into 2025, frames Arctic resource access as a national security priority. Whether the approach involves diplomatic pressure, investment incentives, or security partnerships, the underlying calculus is the same: secure long-term access to defense minerals before a rival does.
In December 2025, Greenland granted a 30-year exploitation license to GreenRoc Mining for the Amitsoq graphite deposit. The project is backed by the European Raw Materials Alliance and targets one of the world’s highest-grade graphite deposits: a mineral essential to battery anodes and, by extension, the entire EV supply chain. This isn’t abstract geopolitics; it’s concrete resource diplomacy playing out in real time.
The Kvanefjeld Problem
Not everything is moving smoothly. The Kvanefjeld rare earth project: potentially the crown jewel of Greenland mining: has been stuck in legal and political limbo for years.
The deposit contains both rare earths and uranium, and that’s where the trouble starts. In 2021, Greenland’s parliament reinstated a ban on uranium mining, effectively halting development at Kvanefjeld. Energy Transition Minerals (formerly Greenland Minerals) has been fighting back, filing litigation demanding $11.5 billion in compensation since 2022.

Local opposition runs deep. Environmental concerns, indigenous rights issues, and skepticism about whether mining wealth will actually benefit Greenlandic communities have fueled resistance. The irony is sharp: a project marketed as essential to the energy transition faces opposition partly because of the climate impacts Arctic residents are already experiencing firsthand. Three-quarters of Greenland’s population reports personally experiencing climate change effects.
Greenland’s political establishment has historically positioned resource extraction as central to achieving economic self-sufficiency and eventual independence from Denmark. But that consensus is fraying as specific projects encounter grassroots resistance.
What Comes Next
The Arctic geopolitics playbook is shifting from military posturing to long-term diplomatic and security deals focused on resource access. The U.S., EU, and China are all running variations of the same strategy: lock in exploration rights, build relationships with local governments, and position for the eventual moment when these deposits become commercially viable at scale.
Infrastructure remains the critical bottleneck. Greenland lacks the roads, ports, and energy systems needed to support large-scale mining operations. Building that infrastructure in an Arctic environment is expensive, slow, and politically sensitive.
But the strategic imperative isn’t going away. Demand for rare earth elements is projected to increase 400-600% by 2040 under most energy transition scenarios. Graphite demand for batteries is on a similar trajectory. Cobalt, nickel, copper: all the same story.

Greenland sits on verified deposits of nearly everything the energy transition requires. The geology is favorable. The political alignment: at least at the national government level: is generally pro-development. The question is whether the operational, environmental, and social barriers can be navigated quickly enough to matter.
For mining executives, investors, and policymakers tracking critical mineral supply chains, Greenland isn’t a hypothetical anymore. It’s a live bet on the future of Arctic geopolitics, and the stakes are only going up.
