Ioneer Ltd. has strengthened the development path for the Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project in Nevada. The company signed non-binding letters of intent with KIND and Hyundai Engineering. These agreements support the project’s technical execution and financial planning.
The agreements were announced in June 2026. Ioneer expects to finalize a memorandum of understanding by July. The partnerships reduce project risk ahead of a final investment decision in the second half of 2026. The company continues to target first production in 2029.
Engineering and Infrastructure Alignment with Hyundai
The partnership with Hyundai Engineering strengthens the project’s technical foundation. Ioneer wants to ensure the complex infrastructure requirements of Rhyolite Ridge are supported by Tier-1 expertise.
Under the LOI, Hyundai Engineering will support engineering, procurement and infrastructure planning. The project has already completed more than 70% of its advanced engineering work. Hyundai’s involvement should help accelerate the transition into construction and operations.
Hyundai Engineering brings valuable experience to the project. Rhyolite Ridge differs from most lithium developments because it produces two products. The processing facility will extract both battery-grade lithium hydroxide and technical-grade boric acid.
Analysts believe Hyundai’s experience with large industrial processing plants will help reduce execution risk. This expertise is particularly valuable for a project that uses a unique mineral processing flowsheet.
As the project moves toward a final investment decision in 2026, Hyundai remains a leading candidate for major EPCM responsibilities. Furthermore, the partnership gives Ioneer a clear path to scale infrastructure for annual production of approximately 22,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide and 174,000 tonnes of boric acid.
KIND and the Mobilization of Korean Capital
While Hyundai provides technical support, KIND strengthens the project’s financial foundation. KIND is a South Korean state-backed organization that supports overseas infrastructure and development projects involving Korean companies.
The LOI with KIND focuses on funding and strategic support. Although the agreement remains non-binding, it demonstrates strong interest from South Korean institutional investors in U.S. critical minerals projects. In addition, KIND could help connect Ioneer with Korean capital markets and government-backed financing institutions.
This development comes as lithium price forecasts remain a major concern for investors. South Korean support strengthens the project’s financial outlook. As a result, Ioneer becomes less dependent on short-term equity market conditions. The partnership also highlights the strategic value of Rhyolite Ridge as a stable non-Chinese source of battery materials.
The Rhyolite Ridge Advantage: Dual-Commodity Economics
Rhyolite Ridge stands apart from many lithium projects because of its boron co-product. Most lithium operations depend heavily on lithium prices. However, Rhyolite Ridge can also generate revenue from boric acid production.
The project contains high concentrations of boron. This resource allows the company to produce boric acid for use in glass, fiberglass and ceramic manufacturing.
Revenue from boric acid should significantly reduce lithium production costs. Consequently, the project could rank within the lowest quartile of the global lithium cost curve. This boron credit provides protection during periods of weaker lithium prices. It likely contributed to the interest shown by Hyundai and KIND.
The project could produce approximately 135,500 tonnes of boric acid annually. Therefore, Ioneer could become a significant participant in the global boron market. Only a small number of companies currently dominate this sector.
The additional revenue stream strengthens the project’s economics. Moreover, it supports Ioneer’s efforts to secure funding for the multibillion-dollar development.
Strategic Importance to the U.S. Supply Chain
U.S. policymakers continue to monitor progress at Rhyolite Ridge closely. The federal government wants to strengthen domestic battery supply chains. Therefore, projects like Rhyolite Ridge play an important role in national industrial policy.
The combination of Korean capital and Nevada-based production reflects the broader trend of friend-shoring. Governments and companies increasingly build supply chains with allied nations to reduce dependence on geopolitical rivals.
Since 2016, Ioneer has invested more than $220 million in the project. The company has funded environmental studies, permitting activities and extensive metallurgical testing.
Rhyolite Ridge remains one of the most advanced lithium projects in the United States. Furthermore, it can produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide on-site without relying on offshore refining facilities.
The project plans to supply lithium hydroxide directly to the U.S. EV battery market. It could provide enough material for hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles each year. This domestic supply supports Inflation Reduction Act requirements for locally sourced critical minerals.
Timeline to Production: 2026–2029
With the Hyundai and KIND agreements in place, Ioneer continues to follow a disciplined development schedule.
The company’s immediate priority is converting the LOIs into a formal memorandum of understanding by the end of July 2026. After that, management will focus on completing the Environmental Impact Statement and federal permitting process.
Regulators have closely examined the project because of Tiehm’s buckwheat, a rare plant species found near the site.
Ioneer has incorporated extensive conservation measures into its mine plan. The company believes these protections will preserve the plant while maintaining planned production levels.
Following a final investment decision in late 2026, Ioneer plans a 36-month construction period. Thousands of workers will help build the processing facility, sulfuric acid plant and supporting infrastructure in Esmeralda County.
Market Outlook and Analysis
The move toward South Korean partnerships reflects the growing maturity of the junior mining sector. Rather than relying solely on traditional debt and equity financing, companies increasingly seek strategic partners that provide both capital and operational expertise.
For Ioneer, Hyundai’s involvement adds credibility. Consequently, lenders and future offtake partners may gain greater confidence in the project’s execution strategy.
The battery metals sector still faces supply chain challenges and demand fluctuations. However, long-term demand forecasts for lithium and copper remain strong. Global electrification continues to support the sector’s growth prospects.
Scale and cost efficiency remain key competitive advantages. Rhyolite Ridge benefits from both. The project combines unique mineralogy with strong strategic partnerships.
Rhyolite Ridge has the potential to become a cornerstone of the North American lithium industry. However, Ioneer must still convert the LOIs into binding agreements. Even so, the latest partnerships demonstrate that the project has moved well beyond the speculative stage.
Investors and operators will watch the second half of 2026 closely. Ultimately, the conversion of these strategic agreements into formal commitments will determine whether Ioneer can deliver one of Nevada’s most significant mining developments.
