ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire : Awalé Resources Ltd. has reported a series of high-grade gold and copper assay results from its flagship Odienné project, significantly expanding the known mineralized footprint and confirming a major underground growth component. The 2026 exploration program, which targeted deep extensions of the BBM and Charger deposits, suggests the project is transitioning from a series of near-surface discoveries into a large-scale, high-grade district.
The latest results are headlined by deep drilling at the BBM deposit, where hole BBDD-21 intersected 42 meters at 1.9 g/t gold and 0.57% copper from 570 meters downhole. This intercept includes a high-grade core of 10 meters grading 3.7 g/t gold and 0.85% copper (4.2 g/t AuEq). These figures confirm that mineralization continues well below the current open-pit resource shell, remaining open at depth.

BBM Deposit: Proving the Underground Thesis
The 2026 deep-drilling campaign at Odienné was specifically designed to test the theory that the gold-copper systems in the region possess significant vertical continuity. Awalé’s 11-hole, 7,000-meter step-down program has effectively validated this model at the BBM deposit.
Initial results from the program point to an emerging underground component that could significantly enhance the project’s economics. By intersecting continuous mineralization to approximately 600 meters vertical depth, Awalé has demonstrated that the high-grade core is not constrained by the limits of a traditional open-pit operation.
“The consistency of the grades at depth is a game-changer for the project’s valuation,” noted an industry analyst following the release. “Hitting 4.2 g/t gold equivalent at these depths suggests we are looking at a system with the plumbing to support long-life underground mining.”

Charger Target: Record-Breaking Intercepts
While BBM provides the scale, the Charger target is delivering the grade. Earlier in the 2026 season, Awalé reported some of the highest-grade gold intersections seen in West Africa in recent years. A discovery in a new breccia pipe returned 26 g/t gold over 57 meters, including a staggering 45.7 g/t gold over 32 meters.
Subsequent follow-up drilling at Charger 1 has confirmed strong down-plunge continuity. This high-grade breccia system is increasingly viewed as a primary driver for the project’s overall gold inventory. The geological profile of Charger: characterized by intense mineralization within structural conduits: is a classic indicator of deep-seated mineralizing events common in high-value IOCG (Iron Oxide Copper Gold) or intrusive-related systems.

The following table summarizes the most significant intercepts from the recent exploration phase at Odienné:
| Hole ID | Target | From (m) | Interval (m) | Gold (g/t) | Copper (%) | AuEq (g/t) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BBDD-21 | BBM | 570 | 42.0 | 1.90 | 0.57 | 2.76 |
| incl. | BBM | 600 | 10.0 | 3.70 | 0.85 | 4.97 |
| CHDD-44 | Charger | 165 | 32.0 | 45.70 | – | 45.70 |
| BBDD-25 | BBM | 625 | 18.5 | 2.10 | 0.44 | 2.76 |
AuEq calculated using 2026 spot prices of $2,400/oz Au and $4.50/lb Cu.
Defining the Resource: 1.71 Million Ounces and Counting
The exploration success has already translated into a robust Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE). Awalé’s current NI 43-101 Inferred resource stands at 32.4 million tonnes grading 1.64 g/t AuEq, totaling 1.71 million ounces of gold equivalent.
This resource is currently distributed across three main centers:
- BBM: Combining near-surface open-pit material with the newly identified underground extensions.
- Charger: Focused on the high-grade underground potential within the breccia pipes.
- Empire: Primarily a shallow, open-pit resource that remains a candidate for expansion.
The strategic importance of Odienné is further highlighted by its partnership with Newmont Corporation. The joint venture structure allows Awalé to leverage Newmont’s technical expertise and financial backing to explore what is increasingly looking like a major new mining district in Côte d’Ivoire. This comes at a time when the IEA warns of a worsening copper supply outlook, making new high-grade discoveries like Odienné critical for the global supply chain.

Côte d’Ivoire: A Mining Powerhouse in Transition
The success of Awalé Resources underscores the growing appeal of Côte d’Ivoire as a tier-one mining jurisdiction. Unlike some of its neighbors, Côte d’Ivoire has maintained a stable regulatory environment and has actively encouraged foreign investment in its Birimian greenstone belts.
As gold prices continue to find support from central bank buying in 2026, the economics for projects like Odienné become increasingly compelling. The shift toward underground potential at Odienné also aligns with global trends in mining technology, where autonomous drilling and precision mining allow for the extraction of deeper, higher-grade ores with a lower surface footprint.
Outlook for 2026-2027
Awalé plans to continue its aggressive drilling program through the remainder of 2026. The primary focus will remain on “stepping down” the BBM and Charger systems to delineate the full extent of the underground resources.
With the 1.71 million ounce milestone already surpassed, the company is targeting a resource update in early 2027. Investors and industry observers are closely watching to see if the project can reach the 3-5 million ounce threshold typically required to justify a large-scale, standalone processing hub. Given the recent hit at BBM: 42 meters of nearly 3 g/t gold equivalent at 600 meters depth: the momentum is clearly in Awalé’s favor.
