
Antimony, a critical mineral for weapons and renewable energy, is gaining attention from the mining industry, with Alaska positioned as a potential key player. As the U.S. aims to reduce reliance on China, the dominant global antimony producer, the mineral’s importance for national security and energy infrastructure has become increasingly apparent.
Alaska’s Untapped Potential
Alaska boasts unparalleled geological wealth, housing deposits of 49 of the 50 minerals deemed “critical” by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Among these, it stands out for its broad applications, ranging from ammunition and flame retardants to solar panels and semiconductors, making it essential to industries such as defense and clean energy.
Currently, no U.S. mines actively produce antimony, leaving the nation dependent on imports, primarily from China. Between 2019 and 2022, nearly two-thirds of domestically consumed antimony originated from Chinese suppliers. Beijing’s recent export restrictions, justified by national security concerns, have further highlighted the urgent need for domestic production.
“Antimony is a strategic metal for the United States,” remarked Joseph Webb, executive director of Felix Gold, an Australian mining company exploring Alaska’s reserves. “We think Alaska is going to play an important role.”

Rising Demand Drives Alaska’s Antimony Exploration
Global demand for it has surged due to its application in arms shipments to Ukraine and Israel, along with its growing use in solar panel production. This heightened demand has pushed it’s prices to record levels, spurring mining companies to explore Alaska’s untapped resources.
Felix Gold and Nova Minerals, both Australian firms, are leading these efforts. Felix Gold aims to commence antimony production at its Treasure Creek site near Fairbanks by 2025, while Nova Minerals is investigating deposits near Anchorage. Both companies are seeking financial backing from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), which is actively funding projects to reduce dependence on Chinese imports.
Challenges and Opportunities in Alaska
Mining in Alaska, despite its potential, faces significant challenges. Many deposits are located in remote areas, lacking essential road access and infrastructure. Additionally, local opposition to mining projects near residential zones, such as Felix Gold’s operations close to a Fairbanks subdivision, could delay development.
“I would argue that developing a mine right across the road from a neighborhood is a pretty inappropriate area,” said Katie McClellan, a representative of the Northern Alaska Environmental Center. Environmental advocates also caution that federal funding for antimony projects might indirectly benefit gold mining, which remains the primary focus for both Felix Gold and Nova Minerals.
Proponents, however, argue that small-scale antimony mines could be developed quickly and cost-effectively. Christopher Gerteisen, Nova Minerals’ CEO, estimates the startup cost of their antimony project at $25 million, with production possibly beginning 18 months after securing federal funding. Felix Gold’s project could also benefit from historical data on dormant antimony mines on its property, streamlining regulatory approvals.
Strategic Investments in Critical Minerals
The U.S. government has demonstrated strong support for critical mineral projects.. In 2023, the DoD provided $37.5 million to a graphite mining project in Alaska and $75 million to an antimony and gold project in Idaho. If successful, Alaska’s antimony mines could join these efforts in reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.
During wartime, it was once a cornerstone of U.S. production, with Alaska’s Stampede Mine supplying three-fourths of the nation’s antimony during World War II. Reviving this legacy, even on a smaller scale, could enhance national security while creating economic opportunities in the state.
Alaska’s substantial antimony reserves are attracting attention amid rising global demand and constrained supply. With federal backing and strategic investments, the state could become pivotal in securing America’s critical mineral independence.
As mining companies address logistical, regulatory, and environmental challenges, Alaska’s potential to supply antimony underscores its significance in an evolving geopolitical landscape.
