Dr. Willi Liebherr, Member of the administrative board of Liebherr-International AG, and Dr. Andrew Forrest, Executive Chairman of Fortescue, unveiled the details of this partnership at the MINExpo, underscoring the magnitude of this deal.
“Partnerships with companies like Liebherr – where ambition is backed by action – are critical,” Dr. Forrest said. “This is an important next step in our 2030 Real Zero target – to eliminate emissions from our Australian iron ore operations by the end of the decade.”
Autonomous Battery-Electric T 264 Truck: A Game-Changer in Mining
The highlight of the deal is the development of the autonomous battery-electric T 264 truck, featuring a battery system designed by Fortescue Zero. Of the 475 machines included in the deal, approximately 360 will be these battery-electric T 264 trucks, tripling the 120 trucks originally announced in 2022. These trucks are equipped with a scalable zero-emission battery power system and an Autonomous Haulage Solution (AHS), both designed to be retrofitted onto existing Liebherr haul trucks, futureproofing Fortescue’s fleet.
The use of autonomous battery-electric trucks represents a critical step toward eliminating diesel-powered heavy equipment from Fortescue’s operations. Fortescue has identified this technology as the optimal pathway for decarbonizing its fleet and achieving its 2030 target for emissions reduction. The T 264 trucks will operate within Fortescue’s mining operations in Western Australia, leading the way for other mining companies to adopt green, zero-emission technologies.
