
Cornish Lithium Advances UK’s Geothermal Lithium Production
The UK is taking a significant step toward domestic lithium production as Cornish Lithium secures planning permission for the country’s first geothermal lithium production facility. The project, located at Cross Lanes near Chacewater, Cornwall, aims to extract lithium from naturally occurring geothermal waters, a process crucial for the UK’s transition to renewable energy and electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing.
With construction set to begin this spring, the Cross Lanes Lithium Project will undergo multiple phases of testing before full commercial production. This development marks a major milestone in reducing the UK’s reliance on imported lithium while leveraging Cornwall’s natural resources.

How Geothermal Lithium Production Works
The facility will operate using Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology, a cutting-edge method that efficiently extracts lithium from geothermal waters while reinjecting the water back underground. This sustainable lithium extraction process minimizes environmental impact and enhances the feasibility of domestic lithium production.
In Phase One, Cornish Lithium will drill and test two 2000-meter-deep production-scale geothermal wells. The first well will extract lithium-rich geothermal waters, while the second will return the processed water underground. Additionally, the project will explore the potential to harness geothermal heat for local businesses and homes, maximizing the site’s efficiency.
During Phase Two, a temporary demonstration plant will be constructed to validate the production of lithium compounds. The results from this phase will determine the feasibility of a full-scale commercial plant, which could position the UK as a key player in the global lithium supply chain.
Why Geothermal Lithium Production Matters for the UK
The demand for lithium has surged due to its critical role in EV batteries, grid-scale energy storage, and consumer electronics. Currently, the UK imports 100% of its lithium supply, leaving it vulnerable to price fluctuations and geopolitical risks. Establishing a domestic source through geothermal lithium production reduces reliance on foreign suppliers and strengthens the UK’s battery supply chain.
Cornish Lithium’s initiative builds on successful exploration drilling at Cross Lanes in 2023, where lithium-enriched waters were confirmed within the region’s geological structures. The company has also been testing DLE technologies at its United Downs pilot plant since 2021, further proving the viability of this approach.
