LONDON : Endeavour Mining reported a record surge in financial performance for the first quarter of 2026, as a historic rally in gold prices more than offset a double-digit decline in production volume. The West African-focused producer announced that its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) jumped 60% year-over-year, reaching $872 million, even as group gold production fell to 282,000 ounces.
The results highlight a dramatic shift in the mining sector’s margin dynamics. While operational headwinds and inflationary pressures have pushed all-in sustaining costs (AISC) higher across the industry, the spot gold market: which recently breached the $4,800 per ounce threshold: has provided a massive windfall for senior producers with established footprints in low-cost jurisdictions.
Financial Windfall Amid Price Surge
Endeavour's realized gold price for Q1 2026 averaged $4,810 per ounce, a significant leap from the figures seen just twelve months prior. This pricing environment propelled the company’s adjusted net earnings to $370 million, or $1.53 per share. This represents a 65% increase over the preceding quarter, demonstrating the high leverage the company maintains to the gold price.
The company’s free cash flow reached $613 million for the quarter, equivalent to $2,176 per ounce produced. This robust cash generation has allowed Endeavour to maintain a healthy balance sheet, reporting a net cash position of $405 million and total liquidity of $1,704 million at the end of March.
"The strength of our portfolio is evident in these results," said Ian Cockerill, CEO of Endeavour Mining. "While we managed through scheduled lower-grade cycles at several of our flagship assets, the extraordinary strength of the gold market has allowed us to capture record margins. Our focus remains on operational discipline and the delivery of our organic growth pipeline, which will further cement our position as the leading gold producer in West Africa."
Operations: Navigating Grade Sequences and Cost Pressures
The dip in production to 282,000 ounces, down from 341,000 ounces in Q1 2025, was largely attributed to mining sequences at the Sabodala-Massawa, Mana, and Ity mines. Management noted that these operations processed lower-grade ore during the quarter in accordance with long-term mine plans. Conversely, Houndé and the newly commissioned Lafigué mine saw production increases driven by higher average grades.

However, the cost of production has not remained immune to the current economic environment. Endeavour reported an AISC of $1,834 per ounce for the quarter, an increase of nearly $190 per ounce compared to late 2025.
Two primary factors drove this cost escalation:
- Royalty Payments: The surging gold price triggered higher royalty tiers in West African jurisdictions, adding $108 per ounce to the AISC.
- Operational Factors: Increased sustaining capital related to waste-stripping activities and a temporary reliance on more expensive off-grid power at the Mana operation contributed to the rise.
Despite these pressures, the company’s margins remain among the highest in the sector. At an AISC of $1,834 and a realized price of $4,810, Endeavour is netting nearly $3,000 in margin for every ounce of gold sold.
Assafou Project: The Next Growth Engine
A major highlight of the quarterly update was the progress on the Assafou project, part of the Tanda-Iguela property in Côte d’Ivoire. The recently completed Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) has confirmed Assafou as a "cornerstone asset" for the company.
The DFS outlines a project capable of producing 320,000 ounces of gold per year at an AISC of just $1,026 per ounce over the first eight years of its 16-year mine life. This cost profile would place Assafou in the lowest quartile of the global cost curve, significantly lowering Endeavour’s group-wide AISC upon commissioning.

The Assafou project represents a massive infrastructure undertaking, similar in scale to major underground developments shown here.
The economics of the project are particularly compelling at current market prices. At a conservative $4,000 per ounce gold price, well below current spot rates: Assafou demonstrates an after-tax net present value (NPV) of $5.1 billion and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 55%. The estimated payback period is less than two years.
"Assafou is arguably the best undeveloped gold project in West Africa," Cockerill noted. "The scale and grade we are seeing support our strategy of focusing on high-quality, long-life assets. We have already launched early works and are targeting a Final Investment Decision (FID) before the end of 2026."
The project requires an upfront capital investment of $1,061 million. Given the company's current cash flow generation, analysts expect Endeavour to fund the development primarily through internal cash reserves, avoiding the dilutive financing rounds that have hampered smaller peers in the exploration and development sector.
Strategic Outlook and Market Context
The $4,800 gold price environment has fundamentally altered the investment thesis for senior gold producers. As central banks continue to diversify reserves and geopolitical tensions remain elevated, gold has cemented its role as the premier safe-haven asset. For operators like Endeavour, the challenge is now balancing the capture of these record prices with the long-term sustainability of their assets.
Industry analysts suggest that the rise in AISC across the board is a trend to watch, but for now, the price of the metal is outstripping cost inflation. "We are seeing a massive divergence between those who can deliver consistent production and those struggling with permitting or grades," said an analyst covering the West African region. "Endeavour’s ability to pivot toward its next major project while printing record EBITDA is a testament to their regional dominance."

The company's focus on Côte d'Ivoire with the Assafou project and the continued ramp-up of Lafigué reflects a broader industry trend of focusing on mining-friendly jurisdictions within the region. As regulatory frameworks evolve globally, maintaining strong local partnerships and ESG standards has become a prerequisite for operational stability.
Key Risks and Challenges
While the financial results are stellar, Endeavour faces several headwinds common to the region. Geopolitical stability in the Sahel remains a concern for investors, though the company’s operations in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire are generally considered lower-risk compared to those in more volatile neighboring states.
Furthermore, the reliance on high gold prices to mask rising AISC is a strategy with an expiration date. Should gold prices retract toward historical norms, the $1,800+ AISC seen this quarter would become a significant burden. Endeavour management is acutely aware of this, which explains the aggressive push toward lower-cost assets like Assafou.
The company is also contending with a tighter labor market for skilled mining professionals, a trend forecasted earlier this year. Recruiting and retaining the technical talent necessary to bring a billion-dollar project like Assafou online will be a primary focus for the executive team over the next 24 months.
Conclusion
Endeavour Mining's Q1 2026 performance is a masterclass in capitalizing on market volatility. By delivering a 60% jump in EBITDA during a production dip, the company has proven the resilience of its business model in a high-price environment. With the Assafou project now fast-tracked toward a 2026 investment decision, the company is positioning itself not just to survive the current cycle, but to lead the next generation of gold production in West Africa.
Investors and industry stakeholders will be watching closely for the next set of drill results from Tanda-Iguela and further updates on the construction timeline for Assafou. For now, Endeavour remains a primary beneficiary of the new gold reality.
