Hexagon AB has announced its acquisition of indurad, a leader in radar and real-time location systems (RTLS) technologies, along with its autonomous haulage subsidiary, xtonomy. Expected to finalize by late November, the acquisition highlights Hexagon’s strategy to revolutionize the mining industry with integrated technologies that enhance safety, productivity, and autonomy.
“This acquisition represents another step toward realizing our vision of fully connected and integrated mine workflows,” said Norbert Hanke, Interim President and CEO of Hexagon. “indurad’s radar technology aligns perfectly with our focus on safety and autonomy, and we are excited to integrate their capabilities into our portfolio to unlock its full potential.”

Advancing Mine Safety and Productivity
One of the key benefits of the acquisition is its potential to enhance safety in mining operations. indurad’s radar-based collision avoidance systems (CAS) provide real-time object tracking and precise location monitoring, significantly reducing risks in hazardous environments.
Beyond safety, the integration of indurad’s technology is poised to improve operational efficiency. Features like real-time ore tracking and measurement systems will streamline workflows, minimizing inefficiencies and downtime while boosting productivity.
Accelerating the Shift to Autonomous Mines
The acquisition also strengthens Hexagon’s position in autonomous mining. By combining indurad’s expertise in mobile machine automation and its OEM-agnostic autonomy platform with Hexagon’s existing solutions, the company aims to set a new benchmark for mine automation.
The addition of xtonomy, a specialist in autonomous haulage systems (AHS), bolsters Hexagon’s capabilities further. xtonomy’s AHS has already been successfully deployed at sites like the Sibelco china-clay quarry in the UK, demonstrating its ability to automate articulated dump trucks (ADTs) seamlessly.
Key Innovations and Industry Impact
indurad recently unveiled its Gen5 iProximity PDS/CAS solution at MINExpo 2024. This state-of-the-art system includes the iRTT-LVU (Radio Transponder Tag – Light Vehicle Unit), which enhances collision prevention by providing real-time graphical and acoustic feedback to operators through wireless Android integration.
Key features include:
- Advanced Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity
- Compliance with global safety standards, including ISO 21815 Level 9 support
These innovations highlight Hexagon’s commitment to delivering forward-looking solutions that meet the stringent requirements of modern mining operations.
Financial and Strategic Outlook
indurad reported revenues of approximately €19 million in 2023, though its profitability remains below Hexagon Group’s average. However, Hexagon anticipates significant improvements as operational synergies are realized. With a global workforce of 140 employees, indurad’s integration will enhance Hexagon’s leadership in the mining sector.
The acquisition underscores a strategic move to expand Hexagon’s life-of-mine portfolio, strengthening its offerings in collision avoidance, automation, and autonomous solutions.
Implications for the Mining Sector
Hexagon’s acquisition of indurad and xtonomy reflects a growing trend in the mining industry: the adoption of advanced technologies to address critical safety and efficiency challenges. As autonomous systems and real-time tracking technologies become essential, this deal positions Hexagon as a leader in mining innovation.
By merging radar, RTLS, and autonomous solutions, Hexagon is poised to redefine industry standards for connected, efficient, and safe mining operations.
