Lindian Resources (ASX: LIN) has confirmed a significant technical milestone at its Kangankunde Rare Earth Project in Malawi, reporting a 98% Neodymium-Praseodymium (NdPr) extraction rate following the completion of large-scale hydrometallurgical testwork.
The results, verified by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), represent a critical de-risking step for the project as it moves toward commercial production. The final phase of testing demonstrated a scale-up improvement from the previously reported 97% extraction rate, signaling higher potential yields for the magnetic rare earth elements essential to the global energy transition.
Technical Breakthrough and Recovery Metrics
The ANSTO testwork focused on the downstream processing of monazite concentrate using a conventional sulphuric acid bake and water leach flowsheet. Key performance indicators from the final large-scale tests include:
- 98% NdPr extraction: A 1% improvement over earlier laboratory results.
- 96% TREY extraction: Total Rare Earth extraction including Yttrium.
- 96% Overall NdPr recovery: Total efficiency from concentrate to Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate (MREC).
- Minimal Impurity Loss: Combined impurity losses were restricted to approximately 1.1%.

The high recovery rates are particularly significant for rare earths supply chain 2026 projections, as NdPr continues to dominate demand for permanent magnet production used in electric vehicles and wind turbines.
Radioactive Exemption and Global Logistics
One of the project’s most competitive advantages is the purity of its output. ANSTO confirmed that the MREC product generated from Kangankunde is exempt from radioactive transport classification under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) SSR-6 standards.
This classification significantly reduces logistical hurdles and costs associated with the international shipping of rare earth concentrates. The ultra-low thorium and uranium content allows the material to be treated as standard industrial cargo, facilitating smoother integration into global mining by regions.
Strategic Alignment with SARECO
The production of a high-purity MREC aligns with Lindian’s strategic memorandum of understanding with the SARECO MREC facility in Kazakhstan. This partnership provides a defined downstream pathway, allowing Lindian to bypass the need for an immediate onsite separation plant while still capturing significant value in the midstream.
