Asian Battery Metals (ASX: ABM) has delivered a decisive technical milestone at its flagship Oval copper-nickel-PGE discovery in Mongolia, reporting metallurgical recoveries of up to 95% copper through a conventional flotation process. The results, announced this week, underscore the project’s potential to produce a marketable copper concentrate at a time when global demand for the red metal is tightening amid the energy transition.
Metallurgical Breakthrough: 95% Copper Recovery
Initial test work on Oval ore achieved copper recoveries as high as 95%, confirming the deposit’s ability to yield a clean, saleable concentrate without complex processing. ABM noted that additional studies are underway to optimise recovery of nickel and associated platinum group elements (PGEs).
Managing Director Gan-Ochir Zunduisuren said the interim results validate Oval’s path toward commercial development.
“Metallurgy is a critical criterion in advancing any mineral property. These results show Oval has potentially viable metallurgy that could be pivotal in our future economic studies,” he said.
The achievement is significant given the early stage of the discovery, made less than a year ago. The company is now positioned to integrate these findings into scoping-level evaluations.
Oval Discovery Driving Expansion in Mongolia’s Copper Belt
Oval sits within ABM’s broader Yambat project, where systematic exploration over four years culminated in a standout October 2024 intercept of 8.8m at 6.08% copper, 3.19% nickel, 1.63 g/t combined platinum, palladium and gold, and 0.11% cobalt.
The company has rapidly expanded its footprint in southern Mongolia’s frontier copper-nickel belt. In the September quarter, ABM secured the 3,327-hectare Bayan Sair tenement, south of Yambat, and an option over the Maikhan Uul copper-gold project, located just 8km from Oval.
The company’s exploration strategy leverages a validated geophysical model, which successfully pinpointed the high-grade sulphide mineralisation at Oval. This approach is now being extended across multiple prospects within the camp-scale project area.
Strong Balance Sheet Underpins Work Program
ABM closed the first half of FY2025 with A$4.1 million in cash, ensuring funding for drilling, assay analysis, and metallurgical test work. Current priorities include a mineralogy study on three composite samples, with further metallurgical testing scheduled to follow.
Upcoming catalysts for investors include pending assay results from step-out drilling at Oval and scout holes at Yambat’s MS1, MS2, and Quartz Hill targets. The company is also continuing due diligence on Maikhan Uul, positioning itself for potential acquisition.
Copper’s Role in the Energy Transition
The timing of ABM’s progress coincides with bullish long-term copper demand forecasts. The International Energy Agency projects copper consumption could grow by more than 40% by 2040 due to electrification, renewable energy infrastructure, and electric vehicles. With supply growth constrained by permitting challenges in established jurisdictions, frontier regions like Mongolia are drawing increasing attention from investors and strategics.
Zunduisuren highlighted ABM’s positioning:
“With high-grade intercepts at Oval and a larger land package with camp-scale potential, we’re an efficient explorer operating in one of the world’s underexplored but geologically endowed regions,” he said.
Skillings Analysis
ABM’s 95% copper recovery rate is a strong technical de-risking event. For industry observers, the simplicity of the flotation process is particularly encouraging, reducing future capital intensity and operational risk.
- If nickel and PGE recoveries are optimised, Oval could evolve into a polymetallic project with diversified revenue streams.
- The company’s aggressive expansion strategy suggests management is preparing to position Oval not only as a stand-alone asset but potentially as part of a larger district play.
- Mongolia’s regulatory framework and geopolitical positioning between China and Russia remain factors to monitor, particularly as global competition for critical minerals intensifies.
Outlook
With assays pending and new targets advancing, ABM is likely to maintain strong newsflow through Q4 2025. The metallurgical validation at Oval moves the project closer to economic assessment, while ongoing land acquisitions point to a broader district-scale vision. As copper prices remain resilient, ABM’s progress could attract strategic interest heading into the Christmas quarter.
